This method is similar to the previous one, but uses different biometric characteristics for identification. It applies a slightly stronger infrared light to illuminate the retina. The image is recorded with a high resolution camera, then saved and processed. In the process, the user must focus on a single point, and the head must come to complete still.

This makes this method uncomfortable to use and similarly to active iris identification it may present a health hazard.

Because of the aforementioned facts, the technology of retinal scan faced low user acceptance, despite its reliability. The leading products of the 90s have been redesigned, which made them more user friendly. As regards multitudinius, it is still considered a marginal biometric technology.
